Restoration - The Handrails
The handrails and all the teak were in very bad shape which you
can see from the photos. So bad we thought we would just throw it
all away. Just for the heck of it we pulled out our orbital sander
(Black & Decker Mega Mouse) and some 80 grit sandpaper and did
some aggressive sanding.
Wow! To our surprise, once we got through the initial few layers,
the wood really came alive and started to look good as new. The
team was very excited. We continued to sand from 80 to 120 to 220
with the orbital sander then did a final sanding by hand with 220.
The handrail looked great!
We applied some teak oil to finish off the job.
We all learned a valuable lesson, "Even if the wood looks
like shit, extremely weathered and ready for the dump, always attempt
to sand it to see what happens". You might just be surprise.
This discovery saved us a chuck of money by not having to replace
them and tremendous joy in bringing them back from the dead. Next
